Question about Juniperus communis was created by Cubsfan1955

Hi all,

I have a dwarf Juniperus communis that I picked up at the Chicago show.? I've been trying to find pictures of this tree after pruning and wiring to get some ideas, but it seems that perhaps it's not the best tree for bonsai, even though I picked it up at a bonsai show.? Can you provide some advice on possible styling of this tree.? I've attached a pic but did not do any pruning.

Thanks in advice,

David

Yes, comunis is not a common species for bonsai.

Junipers in general is not very good beginners trees.

The most suitable styles for junipers is formal upright, informal upright and cascading. I have seen cool raft style forests as well, but that may be to make things too complicated for a beginner.

The most important thing in juniper development is yearly thinning and growth maintenance. It is hard to explain in a forum post. But look for books and youtube videos that cover that part.?
